GITONGA No. 1 Ritual Castor Oil is more than a beauty oil—it is a living tradition, handcrafted using ancestral Jamaican methods that have been passed from one generation of women to the next.

Unlike modern industrial oils, our castor oil is prepared using traditional techniques learned from the elder women of Cynthia Gitonga's ancestral community in the mountains of Jamaica. Through years of building relationships founded on trust, respect, and consistency, these remarkable women welcomed Cynthia into a practice that had long been protected within their community, teaching her how to prepare authentic Jamaican Black Castor Oil by hand.

The ritual begins long before the oil is bottled. Castor beans are carefully harvested and transformed through a meticulous process of beating by hand and, when needed, slowly simmering over an open fire. Every step is intentional, honoring a tradition that values patience over speed and craftsmanship over mass production.

Among the women who taught Cynthia, the preparation of castor oil was regarded as sacred work. It was customary that the woman making the oil remained the one to stir and tend the batch from beginning to end, and that the stirring was done with the right hand—a practice rooted in discipline, intention, and respect for the generations before them. While customs vary among families and communities, these teachings remain at the heart of every bottle we create.

Today, GITONGA continues this tradition with gratitude, preserving the wisdom entrusted to us while sharing it with a new generation. Every bottle represents more than nourishment for the skin and hair—it carries a story of heritage, resilience, community, and the enduring knowledge of Jamaican women.

The GITONGA Ritual
